Overview

Taking fake profiles and catfishing out of the dating game

The online dating market has come a long way since the first sites appeared 25 years ago. Whereas there was some stigma attached to using these sites in the early days, they are mainstream today with nearly 40% of US millennials having used a dating app. Dating apps have proved popular globally across all geographies regardless of gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity.

The dating app market is large and growing rapidly. With over 200 million users worldwide, the market generated about $3 billion turnover in 2020 and with projected growth of 13% pa is expected to nearly double by 2025.There are dating apps for almost every niche but of around 1,500 apps, the market is nonetheless dominated by half a dozen, led by Badoo and Tinder who share about half of the market. Despite this dominance there are significant opportunities for new players.

Notwithstanding their popularity, dating apps are not without their problems. The user experience is very disappointing for many users and the apps are certainly not as safe as they should be. Fake profiles, catfishing, scams and harassment are common. And very few incorporate advanced artificial intelligence, user experience or gamification technologies to build competitive advantage.

Business Model & Product Details

Real Dating app’s primary focus is to enable the development of more meaningful relationships via community building and building trust with honest and accurate data by taking out fake profiles and catfishing out of the dating game. Our approach to do this by addressing the issues that now confront the dating app industry.

Real dating app will prioritise safety and security through profile verification and the app will also incorporate sophisticated filtering and fully featured messaging functionality.

Further, the pricing model will be based on users communicating with prospective matches, which is the real value of a dating app, rather than the typical monthly subscription fee.

Real Dating app’s mission is to build an online community through which relationships can be developed and nurtured through trust. The idea is to enable the development of more meaningful relationships by bringing the online dating experience closer to a “real life” experience by taking out fake profiles and cat-fishing out of the dating game.

As a practical means of setting a pathway forward, several specific objectives, with time frames, have been established around which the strategic framework and financial forecasts have been established.

The key objectives are:

  • Launch of the Real dating app – first quarter calendar 2024
  • 40,000 active users – within 12 months of launch
  • 150,000 active users – within 2 years of launch

Industry

The global dating app market is fragmented with some 1,500 sites, many if not most servicing niche or highly target markets. However, the market is dominated by a small number of sites with very large user bases.

The two largest sites are Badoo and Tinder, who together have close to 60% of global users. Badoo has a strong presence in Europe and Latin America but has not been able to establish a significant presence in the US. Tinder, on the other hand, is the dominant player in North America.

US based Match Group, Inc. is the most influential company in the online dating market as it owns and operates the largest global portfolio with over 45 global dating companies including Tinder, Match.com, Meetic, OkCupid, Hinge, PlentyOfFish, Ship, and OurTime.
